The Teaching Gift
Teacher: to teach or give instruction
4 Steps of a Teacher
1. To Guard
2. To Study
3. To Do
4. To Teach
1. To Guard
Responsibility of Teachers
James 3:1 - Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
Teachers communicate truth
Communicating the Word of God should be done in fear and awe
Teachers are entrusted with the very words of God!
Guard Knowledge: Worship & Teaching Work Together Malachi 2:5-7 My covenant with him [Levi] was one of life and peace, and I gave them [life and peace] to him. It was a covenant of fear, and he feared me. He stood in awe of my name. True instruction was in his mouth, and no wrong way was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity. For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.
Teach Sound Doctrine: Titus 1:10,11,16; 2:1-7 Titus 1:10, 11 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.
Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
Titus 2:1 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.
Titus 2:3, 4 [Older women] are to teach what is good…that the word of God may not be reviled.
Titus 2:7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned.
1. To Guard
- Teacher’s responsibility → guard knowledge
- Life and teaching must not revile God’s word
- People seek instruction from teacher’s mouth (and life)
- Teacher teachers WORD OF GOD
not own knowledge
Ezra (steps 2-4)
Ezra 7:6-10
6 - This Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses that the
Lord, the God of Israel, had given, and the king granted him all that he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was on him.
7-10 And there went up also to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king, some of the people of Israel, and some of the priests and Levites, the singers and gatekeepers, and the temple servants. And Ezra came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. For on the first day of the month he began to go up from Babylonia, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the good hand of his God was on him. For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.

Apollos - Acts 18:24-28
Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of *Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. And he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the
Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.

Let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. They are coming to kill you by night.” But I said, “Should such a man as I run away? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.” And I understood (perceived) and saw that
God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me a bad name in order to taunt me. Remember
