Monday Night Prayer Teaching - 2/26/23

I believe God wants to encourage us tonight.

Tonight’s teaching is meant to stoke the fire, to amplify what’s already happening

1. Galatians 6:7-9 - “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit [Monday night prayer→sowing to the Spirit] will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” a. We must believe that we will reap FROM THE SPIRIT because we are praying IN THE SPIRIT b. We are reaping / storing up eternal life as we pray c. We don’t grow weary→we KNOW our actions have eternal reward

2. 1 Kings 8:15 - “Who with his hand has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth” i. Context: Solomon has built a Temple for the presence of God to dwell in. He has just brought in the Ark of the Covenant, and he is blessing the Lord as he dedicates the temple. The presence of God is so strong “that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord” (1 Kings 8:11) ii. Why is Solomon saying the Lord has fulfilled what he spoke?
iii. 2 Samuel 7:12, 13, 16, 17 - “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever…And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever. In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan [the prophet] spoke to David.”

b. 1 Kings 8:20 - “Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise that he made” c. 1 Kings 8:24 - “You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day.” d. Solomon was physically seeing the fulfillment of the promise God made with his father, David. Some of us have seen the fulfillment of the promises God made to us e. But it doesn’t stop there. Solomon asks God to continue to listen f. In 3 verses: Listen→ 4 times; Pray / cry / plea→ 7 times g. 8:27-30 - “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built. Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O Lord my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.” i. Then Solomon begins to prophesy in his prayer and asks of God that when a drought comes (time of Elijah) and when Israel is taken captive because of their sin (Judah taken captive to
Babylon), that God would hear and respond when the captives turn to this temple and pray→Daniel fulfills this when he prays in Babylon and Persia and TURNS toward Jerusalem (some
400 years after Solomon prays this!)
h. 2 Chronicles 7:12-18 - Same story, slightly diff. Rendering i. Listen to how God LISTENED to Solomon and how God PROMISES to fulfill with his hand what Solomon PETITIONS with his mouth i. “The Lord appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: ‘I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and PRAY, and SEEK my face and TURN from their wicked ways, then I will hear from

heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time. And as for you, if you walk before me as David your father walked doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my rules, then I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to rule Israel.’”
1. Wow!!! God promises to fulfill not only everything
Solomon asked for in his prayer, but even what God
promised to David.
2. Don’t grow weary!!! We are reading in the Spirit when we pray on Monday nights!
3. Hebrews 10:23 - “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful” a. Hebrews 11:11 - “By faith Sarah herself received power… b. God intentionally uses the word El Shaddai when he establishes his covenant with Abraham and promises to give him a son (Gen. 17:1,2).
That same word is used here of Sarah
c. El is the semitic word for God. Then God adds an attribute of himself, like Shaddai. El Shaddai means God Almighty and emphasizes the power of God→ THIS is the power Sarah receives to have a son d. I believe the power was both natural and spiritual.
i. Natural because her physical body (90 years old!) received the
POWER of God to bear a child past the typical age of bearing children.
ii. Spiritual because her inner man was strengthened, her faith was established and grounded because she saw a fulfillment to what
God had spoken. He said he would do something, and he did it!
iii. There’s POWER in trusting in God, in choosing to believe that he will perform with his hand what he has spoken with his mouth.

iv. Sarah dies before Isaac gets married, and then Rebekah is barren for 20 years, so Sarah’s grandkids (Jacob and Esau) are born 20-25 years AFTER Sarah dies.
v. But she “considered him faithful who had promised” so even though she didn’t see a generation past her son, she knew God would fulfill his word by making Abraham a father of many nations (Gen. 17:5) vi. God visits Abraham and Sarah in their weakness. They’re 100 and 90; they laugh when God tells them they will have a son in their old age. God visits us in our lowest places so that there is no denying that it was God’s power that worked in us and not our own!
e. Hebrews 11:11 - “By faith Sarah herself received power… to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised” f. Genesis 17:16 - “I will bless her [Sarah], and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations;
kings of people shall come from her.”
i. Solomon declaring in 1 Kings that God has fulfilled with his hand what he spoke with his mouth, is itself the fulfillment of what God promised Sarah: kings will come from her g. Genesis 17:21 - “But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom
Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.”
h. Genesis 21:1, 2 - “The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the
Lord did to Sarah as he had promised. And Sarah conceived and bore
Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.” i. Remember 1 Kings 8: 24 - “You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day.” j. What God spoke w/ his mouth to Sarah, he fulfilled w/ his hand

Deuteronomy 7:6-9 “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples,

but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations”

As we contend in prayer on Monday nights and at home in our own prayer times, ● Let’s not grow weary because we will reap from the Spirit
● Let’s consider him faithful who has promised because we know the One
● Who with his hand has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth
● Let’s pray in faith believing he hears us and he acts on our prayers! Amen?
