LESSON 1
HEART OF A SERVANT
It is a name/title, that is given to one person to refer that he’s in submission to another.
1. We all want to be served, but life requires learning to serve if we want to bless others. Christ throughout his ministry was a servant (Philip.2:7) The great Messianic passages thus prophesied (Isa.42:1; 53:11). He is our example to follow.
2. Many people in the Bible were called servants such as: Abraham, Isaac, Israel, Moses, Samuel, David, Job, Simeon, Paul, Peter, Timothy, James, Judas and others.
They were servants because they decided to worship and serve the one true God.
3. We must ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us, what the intention of our heart is when serving, because that will determine my attitude in the process of doing so (serving).
When our motivations are not correct, we will be driven by pride, or personal interest, instead of seeking to please God. Many Christians are more interested in their privileges and personal rights, rather than the actual enjoyment that comes from serving. This would inevitably lead to ruin.
REASONS TO SERVE
1. It is a mandate. (Philip.2:5-7). One of the teachings of the parables is that the servants, they will be asked to give an account (Luke.12:36-48). Likewise, Jesus Christ will call his servants so that they can give an account of their work.
2. Jesus is our example. (Ef. 5:1). Jesus washed the disciples’ feet before the last supper. (John 13: 14-15). Jesus was not as interested in washing his disciples’ feet —as He was interested in the disciples taking on the role of servant.
God does not need our service. He does not need anything. Not our talent, nor our intelligence, neither our money. If God wants something, it’s already His. God gives us the privilege of serving him, not because of His need, but because of our need. Serving Him gives us joy, and everything we do in Christ is rewarded to us.
In the kingdom of Christ, the attitude of a servant is the key to greatness, not position nor influence. (Mt 20:25-28.)
The truly great ones in heaven (the servants) will be the ones who are humble. The genuine unity of Spirit is only possible if each member of the body of Christ, submits to one another. The joy will come from the privilege of serving others.
SIRVIENDO LOS UNOS A LOS OTROS
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” Galatians
Our service is an act of love and obedience. Genuine unity of the Spirit is only possible if each member of the church submits to one another. Then joy will come from the privilege of serving others.
LESSON 2
CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUE SERVANTS
Character.
The first thing God desires in the attitude of a servant, is his character. Your character is much more important than what you do. The Bible says that Jesus Christ was the righteous servant. Our supreme authority in all matters is the Lord Jesus Christ; not only what he said, but also the example he gave.
They are not looking for their own personal benefit. He will not use the gifts of the Spirit, nor his/her ministry adjudicated by God, only to benefit himself, or to work on his own personal salvation with their gifts. When Jesus was on the cross, one of the taunts that were said to him was this one: “He saved others, he cannot save himself” (Mt 27:42). And that was very true. Jesus never used His ministry to serve Himself, nor to serve His own well-being.
They will go through suffering. A servant will be willing to go through suffering and difficulties in order to fulfill the ministry that Christ has given him. That was the attitude that the Apostle Paul had. “Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (II Cor
Humble
The fundamental characteristic of a servant is humility (Acts 20:19). The servant must be humble before God, and he must be humble before others.
Humble people do not seek recognition for their work. Knowing that service often depends on the complementary work of others, humble people learn from them and try to facilitate the work for other individuals.
Humility allows God to manifest himself (Is. 57:15). Jesus showed a humble servant spirit by assuming his function and washing the feet of his disciples (Jn. 13:14-17).
Obedient
• True obedience is immediate, not late. Once the will of God is known, the obedient servant does not doubt the will of the Lord.
• Obedience is the only virtue that understands the sense of God’s authority, obedience means that you are truly a servant of God. (I Sam 15:22).
• Jesus’ obedience became evident throughout his life (Lk.2:51; Jn.12:50) “but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.” John
WILLING
• (Ef. 6;7) Our service must be enthusiastic. Often our behavior depends on our feelings and not on our will.
• Constant obedience cannot be the result of feelings, but of will. Even when feelings are out of control, you can give the will to God.
• Being willing to serve allows God to reward you divinely (Col 3:24). The passion of Jesus Christ was to do the Father’s will: (Mt.26:42). The will of the Lord must be the will of the servant, or the work will not be done.
LOYAL
• (Lk 16:13) Loyalty means that you have a wholehearted heart. Only the loyal servant is reliable. God demands loyalty. God is jealous (Ex.20:5).
• Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, by Potiphar’s wife and by the cupbearer; however, he remained faithful to God. Thanks to his loyalty, José was promoted.
• Jesus was loyal, it can be seen in the consecration of his life to the will of the Father.
He was also loyal to his disciples (Jn. 17:12). Jesus was loyal to death on the cross.
VIGILANT
• (Lk 12:40) Vigilante means that you want to know what God says or what He wants you to do.
• The virtue of vigilante proves if you are watching over God (1st. Ts. 5:5-6). Surveillance allows the Lord to speak (Hab 2:1).
• It is not likely that God will speak to servants who are not vigilant. Only those who are prepared for action will hear the voice of the Lord. Jesus was vigilant, he was always seeing the Father to know his address (Jn. 5:19; 5:30)
• Christ always depended on the direction of the Father. Jesus spent the night in prayer before choosing his disciples (Lk 6:12). A vigilant servant remains.
BRAVE. SENSITIVE TO THE VOICE OF THE LORD
• (Lk 1: 74-75) Valor is the virtue of a servant who proves conviction. The courage proves that you are a soldier of God.
• Valor allows God to protect you. Jesus was courageous, endured persecution, suffering and death (Mr. 10:32).
NOT QUARRELSOME
• (2a. Tim 2:24) Not being contentious is being a peacemaker, this allows the Lord to concentrate on the main thing.
• Martha was contentious, but when Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, and heard his Word, Jesus said: “but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Lk.10:42).
PATIENTLY ENDURING EVIL. -LONG-SUFFERING.
• (2a. Tim. 2:24) In the kingdom, waiting is not a waste of time. We must wait in the Lord and also learn to be patient with others.
• Being suffered or patient goes hand in hand with being vigilant. You will not continue to be vigilant if you are not also patient (Ps 130: 5-6).
• Patience allows the Lord to respond to prayer according to his plan. God is patient with us. Jesus was patient with his disciples because of his lack of faith (Mt 8:26; 14:31).
KIND
• (2a. Tim. 2:24) It suggests sociability and sweetness. It has a soothing effect. To be peacemakers, we have to be kind.
• Kindness allows God to strengthen you (Lk 22:31-32).
• Kindness is a forgery if it does not have its root in the fortress. But the fortress
It is also a forgery if it is not linked to kindness.
BE SUITABLE FOR TEACHING
• (2a. Tim. 2:24) The ability to communicate God’s message is expected of all the servants of the Lord.
• Christians are light to this world because the Light of the world dwells in us (Mt 5:14,16).
• Being able to teach allows God to establish divine authority. Peter told us: “Always be prepared to present defense with meekness and reverence before everyone who asks you for reason for the hope that is in you” (1aPe 3:15).
• Jesus was able to teach under divine authority (Lk 4:31-32; Mt 7:28-29).
MEEK
• (2a. Tim. 2:25) Only 2 characters in the Bible were called meek, Moses (No. 12:3); and Jesus (Mt 11:29).
• We can be humble but strong. Only force is submitted on a voluntary basis. The meekness allows the Lord to guide you (Ps 25:9).
• Jesus Christ could come as king, high priest however he came as a modest carpenter, but with great spiritual strength.
GOOD
• Goodness allows the Lord to bear fruit in you. “Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” (Mat 7:
• Goodness proves that you are truly the servant for whom you were redeemed. Let us read (Mt 7:20), a good servant bears good fruit. The goodness of Jesus is affirmed when he affirms “I am the good shepherd” (Jn 10:11).
• In all Jesus was good: good Teacher, the good Savior, the good Brother, the good Husband, the good Priest, etc.
The maximum example of service is of our Lord, who being the Son of God, did not come to be served, but to serve, giving us the best example of a life given out of love for others (Fil 2).
