LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE GOSPELS

PROCLAMATION OF JESUS:

Matt 1:21 - you shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Reference from OT…Immanuel “God With Us”

Luke 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Vs 35 therefore the child to be born[e] will be called holy—the Son of God.

Magi: came from afar, fell to the ground and worshiped Him. They brought treasures, presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Giving is a natural part of worship, more than giving words or songs.

John the Baptist: Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (references Isaiah)

Mark 1:1-8

4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Mark 9:2-13; Luke 10:28-34 Peter, James & John with Jesus: The Transfiguration

This is my beloved son, hear him.

Luke 2 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”[d]

Simeon:

29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant[e] depart in peace,
according to your word;
30 for my eyes have seen your salvation
31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.”

Luke 4: Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

BAPTISM OF JESUS: (Matthew 3:16-17; Mark 1:9-11)

16 So Jesus was baptized. And as soon as he came out of the water, the sky opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. 17 Then a voice from heaven said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him.”

Before Jesus does anything, we see the affirmation of Father.

(Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-16) The Triumphal Entry: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!

THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS:

(Matthew 4, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13)

Full of Holy Spirit, led by the Spirit in the wilderness. Lifestyle of being led by the Spirit and of fasting

#1. Tempted with natural things.

Matt 4 4 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say: ‘No one can live only on food. People need every word that God has spoken.’”

#2. Tempted with His relationship with God.

IF you are the son of God, then surely God will do what He said in his word. The devil used scripture.

5 Next, the devil took Jesus to the holy city and had him stand on the highest part of the temple. 6 The devil said, “If you are God’s Son, jump off. The Scriptures say:

‘God will give his angels orders about you. They will catch you in their arms, and you won’t hurt
your feet on the stones.’”

7 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Don’t try to test the Lord your God!’”

#3. Kingdoms and Glory in exchange for worship

10 Jesus answered, “Go away Satan! The Scriptures say: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

Jesus begins His Ministry: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (4:17)

JESUS CALLED THE DISCIPLES:

Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. (Matt, Mark 1:16-20)

Jesus had life with the disciples, went to their homes. Mark 1: 29 And immediately he[g] left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

MINISTRY OF JESUS:

Ministry in Galilee: teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. (Matt, Luke :4:42-44)

Ministry at Capernaum: 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. (Mark 1:22)

Galilee news spread throughout all Syria

32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. (Mark 1:32-34)

Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8 - Man with Legion of demons freed

Mark 5:25-34; Luke 8:43-48 – The woman with the issue of blood, healed

Mark 5; Luke 8:40-42, 49-56 – raising of Jairus’ daughter

Mark 9:14-28; Luke 10:37-43 Healing the boy with an unclean spirit; restoring family

34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

Large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.

Cleansing the temple: Mark 11: 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

John 4: 35 The Father loves the Son and has given him everything. 36 Everyone who has faith in the Son has eternal life. But no one who rejects him will ever share in that life, and God will be angry with them forever.

John 5: Jesus heals crippled man at pool in Bethzatha

TEACHING THE CROWDS:

Luke 6:20-23

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

He’s not giving principles; He’s describing His nature.

Raised the standard from legalism to righteousness: wasn’t focused on outward works, but on the inward condition of the heart. Transform from human ideas to knowing Christ.

Mark 4: Parable of the Sower

(Matthew 8, Mark 1:40-45) man with leprosy; “if you are willing” The heart of Jesus, so willing, merciful to heal. Jesus moved with compassion.

Jesus in awe of the Centurion’s faith. You don’t even have to come to my house, just speak the word.

(Chapter 9) The Paralytic: Jesus says “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”

3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

Jesus calls Matthew; then reclines with tax collectors and sinners.

Vs 12: Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Vs 13: Go and learn what this means, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.

Vs 36: Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37: Then he said to the disciples, “the size of the harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.

10:6-8 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Mark 834-35; Luke 10:23-27: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life[d] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.

Mar 12:28-34 Scribe asking which is the greatest commandment.

Luke 6: Love your enemies 27 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

John 6:27 - Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Ancient Egyptian culture: unblemished animals that were marked for sacrifice would be sealed with the Priest’s ring. No animal could be sacrificed unless it had the seal.

John 6:53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.

66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

INSTRUCT THE DISCIPLES:

Mark 6:7-13; Luke 9:1-6: sends out the disciples two by two, gave them authority over unclean spirits. Take nothing for your journey. 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

Luke 11:2 Sends out the 70. “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Peter walks on water; rebuked for little faith

Mark 4; Luke 8: Parables – Lamp under a basket, Seed Growing, Mustard Seed

Boy that has seizures/falls into fire; disciples couldn’t case demon out. O faithfulness and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? Little faith

Jesus taught in parables

Mark 9:33-37 Who is the greatest? “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

(Mark 9:42; Luke 17:1-4) p “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,[g] it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. Whatever causes you to sin, get rid of it.

Luke 18:15-17 Disciples were preventing children from coming to Jesus. Jesus was indignant, don’t hinder the children from coming, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. He took them in his arms, them and laid hands on them

Mark 11: the withered fig tree – have faith in God. Ask in faith, believing in your heart. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”[d

Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4 Widow’s offering

Mark 13:3-13 Peter, James, John & Andrew: End of the Age – Don’t be led astray, Be on your guard, the gospel must first be preached to very nation., persecution; he who endures to the end shall be saved.

(Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:14-23; John 13:1-17) The Lord’s Supper/Washing Feet

Mark 16 appeared to disciples after the resurrection, rebuking them for their unbelief and hardness of heart b/c they had not believed Mary Magdalene nor 2 other disciples that Jesus appeared to

15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

John 14: The promise of Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

John 20:19-22 After the Resurrection: 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

JESUS RESPONDS TO FAITH.

Paralytic: (Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26) Jesus saw their faith and responded to the paralytic…”Son your sins are forgiven.”

14 crowds follow Jesus: don’t send them away, you give them something to eat.

Beautiful relationship cycle: we give what we have to Jesus, he blesses it, breaks it (multiplys it) and gives it back for us to give away (Mark 6:30-43; 8:1-9; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15)

Mark 7:24-30 Syrophoenician Woman

Mark 9:46-52 Blind Bartimaeus

Mark 14:3-9, Luke 7:36-50 Woman with Alabaster Jar, what she gave wasn’t wasted, but used to prepare Jesus for burial. Jesus says: She has done a beautiful thing to me. wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”

Luke 7:1-10 Centurion 9 When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.al

Luke 19:1-10 Zaccheaus

Luke 23:32-43 Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom.

John 2:1-11 responds to Mary’s faith: turns water into wine

John 3:43-54 Official’s son healed: Started off unbelieving, Jesus said go home, your son will live and the official believed. His son was healed that very hour.

RELATIONSHIP WITH FATHER:

Luke 2:41-52 Jesus age 12 in the temple, listening and asking questions. All who heard him amazed at his understanding and answers. 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?

Jesus was submissive to them and grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

Mark 1:35 35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Mark 6:46 went out on the mountain to pray.

Mark 14: 32-42; Luke 22:39-46 – If there be any other way, take this cup from me; nevertheless, not my will but your will.

John 4:34 Jesus said: My food is to do what God wants! He is the one who sent me, and I must finish the work that he gave me to do.

John 5:19 Jesus told the people:

I tell you for certain that the Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing, and he does exactly what he sees the Father do. 20 The Father loves the Son and has shown him everything he does. The Father will show him even greater things, and you will be amazed. 21 Just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants to.

22 The Father doesn’t judge anyone, but he has made his Son the judge of everyone. 23 The Father wants all people to honor the Son as much as they honor him. When anyone refuses to honor the Son, that is the same as refusing to honor the Father who sent him. 24 I tell you for certain that everyone who hears my message and has faith in the one who sent me has eternal life and will never be condemned. They have already gone from death to life.

John 17: Insight into Jesus’ prayer –

1-5: Glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you; Knowing God and Jesus is Eternal Life; Jesus glorified God by finishing the work God gave him

6-19: Praying for the disciples:

Protect them, keep them faithful so they may be one as we are one; don’t take them out of the world, but protect them from the evil one; sanctify them by your truth, your word is truth

20-25: Praying for Believers:

Oneness; may they be in God & Christ so the world may believe; brought to complete unity; world will know God sent Jesus and have loved them; I want them to be with me where I am and to see His glory; God’s love may be in them and Christ in them

OPPOSITION:

(Mark 2:23-28, Luke 5:1-5) disciples plucking heads of grain on the Sabbath: Why are you doing what is lawful on the Sabbath? Jesus responds: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

(Mark 3:1-6; Luke 5:6-11) man with withered hand: watching to see if Jesus would heal on the Sabbath so they could accuse him. 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
