Ways we receive the Holy Spirit (What you see and hear)

1. Pentecost

Acts

33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

Acts 2:1-4

2:1 The Day of Pentecost When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

2. (Received through the laying on of hands)

Acts 8:12-17 (Saved then baptised)

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.

13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.

14 Now when the apostles in heard that had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,

15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

3. Apostle Paul

Acts 19:1-7

19:1 It happened that while Apollos was at , Paul passed through the upper country and came to , and found some disciples.

2 He said to them, “ Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “ Into John’s baptism.”

4 Paul said, “ John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

7 There were in all about twelve men.

4. Cornelius’ House

Acts 10:44-47

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.

45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.

46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God.

Four TYPES of Tongues

2 - public ministry - partial for public ministry

2 - personal use - non partial to all believers

PUBLIC MINISTRY

1st - A sign to unbelievers (Pentecost - a known earthly dialect)

1 Cor 14:22 - Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers

2nd - tongues for interpretation

1 Cor 14:5 - Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

3rd - Tongues for Intercession - Direction and Power

Rom 8:26-27

the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

1 Cor 14:2….For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

4th - Build Up Your Internal Faith.

Jude

20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit;

Why should we speak in tongues

Communicate with God at his level

Helps us defeat our weaknesses

edifies

stregnthens our faith

gives us the ability to worship from a higher level

reveals the hidden counsel of god

rest

refreshing

Acts 1:8 purpose to receive Power

Tongues

Ephesians 5:18

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit. [Proverbs 23:20.]

1 Cor 14:1-86 (scripture on tongues)

Ask to Receive

Luke 11:9-13

9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10 “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

11 “Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?

12 “Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he?

13 “ If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
