King David

King Solomon

King Solomon had been established over Israel as under King David his Father

King Solomon has a dream, He receives wisdom from God above all men on the earth

King Solomon Gets a heart to establish the Kingdom and Build the Temple of God

Deut 17:14-20

14 “When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, “I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’

15 you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.

16 “Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, “You shall never again return that way.’

17 “He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

18 “Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.

19 “It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes,

20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his countrymen and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may continue long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.

Solomon’s Sins

Egypt- Solomon’s first act as King towards Diplomatic Alliances id with the King of Egypt

Solomon in order to keep peace between Israel and Egypt to attain military equipment such as horses and chariots married the Princess of Egypt.

Brings the Queen to the City of David and build her a house

Solomon had a love for Horses and is said to have had 4000 horses for his chariots and 12,000 chargers for his Horsemen

Sold horses he bought from Egypt to Syria and Phoenicia for Money for Israel

Phoenicia - Kept a pack with King Hiram ( king of the Phoenicians) in order to keep trading between them for revenue.

The Phoenicians were related to the Canaanites and had established themselves as traders and sailors

The Phoenicians were known for their metalwork and glasswork, woven cloth, and fabric dyed with a color known as Tyrian purple.

Solomon also married the daughter of King Hiram as a sign of the alliance

Solomon’s Many wives

Solomon was known to be a lover of many foreign wives. (700 wives + 300 Concubines)

Solomon Built houses and places of worship for each of his foreign wives so they could worship the God of the own land (Egyptians, Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Hittites)

When Solomon was around age 50 he fell from God and sponsored the heathen worship.

Ashteroth – the Goddess of the Phoenicians

The Northern Kingdom (Israel) & Her Prophets

( Israel ) ( Judah )

King Jeroboam King Rehoboam

Kingdom Prophets

The Northern Kingdom (Israel)

The two Kingdoms of Israel split under the leadership of Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

Rehoboam – Became King over Judah (Jacob)-Southern Kingdoms

Jeroboam – Became king over Israel (Ephraim)- Northern Kingdoms

There were 20 kings that served the Northern Kingdom – None of them were righteous

The Kingdom began from the death of Solomon to the Fall of Israel (Samaria.) by the Assyrians

Reasons for The Kingdoms Split

The reasons for the splitting of the nation of Israel were many.

There had always been a long standing Jealousy between the tribes of Judah & Ephraim.

David & Solomon Had lifted Judah to a place of Leadership (Praise) But Ephraim claimed the most prominate position having come from the oldest son of Joseph who had saved the nation.

The two nations had a great difference in Location and would restrict the communication

They infiltration of Idol worship by Solomon had weakened the one common denominator between the two tribes

The worship of Jehovah

With worship gone the desire to go to Jerusalem for worship was removed except for a small few – thus the political bond was also easily broken

Solomon’s Heavy taxation upon the people resulted in a great division in men’s hearts.

Israel (N Tribes) had been greatly taxed for building programs most of which were done in the southern part of the kingdom in Jerusalem. They resented them not getting much benefit in there area.

Rehoboam listened to the young men and stated he intended to lay a heavier tax upon

Jeroboam had also made an alliance with Shishak king of Egypt while in Exile hiding from Solomon. – He had the support of Egypt to leave Judah

The area of Israel was approximately 3x the size of Judah, and her population was more than 2x larger.

The Land in Israel was very fertile and its commercial advantages were much higher than Judah –thus leading the mass prosperity and luxurious life styles we see the prophets using as backdrops for the Prophesies (Amos & Hosea)

Phoenicia

Phoenicia, The Phoenicians were related to the Canaanites and had established themselves as traders and sailors by the 25th cent. BC. Phoenicians were known for their metalwork and glasswork, woven cloth, and fabric dyed with a color known as Tyrian purple. Their greatest innovation, however, was their alphabet, which was adopted by the Greeks and eventually replaced the older system of hieroglyphic writing. Phoenicia came under Persian domination in the 6th cent. BC and was conquered by Alexander the Great in the 4th cent.

BAAL. The Semitic word baal, meaning owner or master, was also used in ancient religions for lord or god, and it is still defined as a Canaanite or Phoenician deity. Among the greatest of the Semitic peoples’ deities were Baal and Astarte–both symbols of fertility. Baal, the god of the sun, was supposed to make crops grow and flocks increase. Astarte, the goddess of the moon, was identified with passionate love.

The religion of Baal was spread by Phoenician sailors throughout the Mediterranean world. The priests taught that Baal was responsible for droughts, plagues, and other calamities, and they made sacrifices to appease the angry god. Bullocks, goats, sheep, and sometimes humans were burned alive.

The chief divinities of the Phoenician religion were the god Baal and the goddess Astarte, or Ashtoreth. In times of great distress human sacrifices were offered to the god Moloch.

The Syrian demanded that he be allowed to take all women and Children and possessions of his choice for Peace. / / Ahab defeated the Syrian army and took Ben-hadad prisoner in this battle. Then he made a treaty of Peace with Syria to strengthen his defenses against the arising Assyrians. This alliance allowed I to hold off an Assyrian envasion for many years. / / / Ahab then made a third alliance with Judah ending 50 years of hostility. His daughter was given to Jehoram son of King Jehoshaphat. / / / Ahab continued the worship of Baal for his wife and 450 Prophets and 400 prophets of the Asherah were named. / / After having Naboth killed so he can seize his vineyard, Ahab is confronted once again by Elijah, and finally repents, postponing the disaster that God had planned for Israel. / / God’s response was to send Elijah, who predicted or perhaps even caused three and a half years’ drought, which ended after his successful duel with the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah then recruited and trained his successor, Elisha. / / Ahab & Jehoshaphat broke their alliance with Syria and attacked King Ben-hadad. The Prophet Micaiah prophesied Ahabs death in Battle. Assyria

Assyria, Assyria’s original capital, Ashur–named after the city’s principal god- From Ashur Assyrians expanded by means of successive military conquests. The Assyrians had long been under the control of Babylon and had absorbed Babylonian culture. Like the Babylonians they were Semites, and their language was almost identical with the Babylonian. From the Hittites of Anatolia they learned the use of iron and developed powerful weapons to build up a military state. From them they also acquired horses and were the first to use them in war as cavalry instead of for drawing chariots. In order to strike terror into the hearts of their enemies, they boasted of their cruelties.
