THE REALITY

Slide 4

The possibility of a demonized Christian…
Controversial area of spiritual warfare
Urgent in nature
Possibility rejected by Christians (of demonization of true believers)

Slide 5

All Believers can be filled with…
Rage
Anger
Lust
Envy
Jealousy
Lying
Cheating
Stealing
Being unkind
We accept this reality and minister in the world of Christian failure.

Slide 6

Mild to Severe
True believers can be demonized, such demonization can range from mild to severe.
This is different from demon ‘possession” - Satan cannot possess anything other than his own kingdom of fallen spirits.
Under rare and unusual conditions of sin, a believer can become demonized.

Slide 7

Two Explanations
First: They were demonized before their conversion. All demons do not always automatically leave the body of demonized unbelievers when they turn to Christ.
Second: Believers become demonized after their conversion by serious sins they commit, or serious sins committed against them.
(Eph 4:27) This demonic condition is usually mild. Most are able to maintain a normal life.

Speaker notes:

To be assured that demonized unbelievers will be set free from their demons, power-encounter evangelism may have to occur.
Demons may come into full manifestation while trying to lead them to Christ. This may happen with severely demonized unbelievers.
Group evangelism (Acts 8)
Troubled believers often fluctuate between rejecting these thoughts, practicing Phillipians 4:8, and being overpowered by them.

Slide 8

Those who reject the possibility of demonization of Christians affirm that the Holy Spirit cannot dwell in the same body with demons.
Not a single verse of Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit cannot or will not dwell in a human body or any other area, where demons are present.

Slide 9

The major premise: Every Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit
The minor premise: The Holy Spirit cannot dwell with demons
The conclusion: Christians cannot have demons

Slide 11

Four Primary Sin Areas
Illicit sexual practices or fantasies out of control.
Deep-Seated anger, bitterness, hatred, rage and rebellion, often leading to destructive and/or self destructive impulses.
A sense of rejection, guilt, poor self – esteem, unworthiness, and shame.
Strange attraction to the occult/spirit world.

Speaker notes:

Usually demonically troubled believers battle in four primary sin areas. All four areas can exist without demonization being present, but certainly some demonic activity to some degree (afflliction or attachment)
Most demonized believers do NOT need dramatic, spectacular one on one prolonged power encounter deliverance sessions.

Slide 12

Case Study 1
1. King Saul (I Sam 9-31)
True Old Testament believer. Filled by the Holy Spirit (on more than one occasion). On three occasions an evil spirit entered his life, causing dramatic personality changes when the demon was in manifestation.

Slide 13

Case Study 2
Rebellious nation of Israel (Hos 4:1-10)
It is possible that most of the adult Jews who had given themselves to idol worship were demonized when God sent them into captivity. The prophets describe in shocking detail their total surrender to the spirit world. The people became demonized as the Baal worshipers they had joined.

Speaker notes:

Israel united the cult of Baal with the worship of Jehovah (Hos. 2:13-17). The result was that it soon led Israel to reject the Law of her God. Israel was in turn, rejected by God. (Hos. 4:1-10). Israel became ensnared by the devil.

Slide 14

Case Study 3
3. New Testament (Mark 1:21-28; 39)
In the New Testament there are vivid accounts of Jews, regular synagogue attenders, who were severely demonized.

Slide 15

Case Study 4
4. The demonized daughter of Abraham (Luke 13:10-17)
She was a true Jewish believer (v.16). Her sickness was caused by an evil spirit (v.11) from which Jesus set her free!

Slide 16

Case Study 5
5. Demonized church family (Acts 5:1-10)
Ananias and Sapphira were believers, but Satan had filled the heart of Ananias (v.3). “To fill is to control, the same expression used for the filling of the Holy Spirit”

Speaker notes:

John’s promise in 1 John 5:18 that the Evil One will not touch the believer and how it applies to this case?
a) If the believer gives place to the Devil (Eph 4:27) he can bring them into bondage of himself.
New Testament teachings:
a) 1 Tim 3:6-7, 5:15
b) 2 Tim 2:26
c) 1 Cor 5:5, 11:30-31
d) 1 Tim 1:20

Slide 17

God can use Satan’s touch against sinning believers to humble them.
In some cases, God even allows Satan to take the life of godly, obedient, faithful believers. Rev. 2:10, 12:17, 13:7

Speaker notes:

In the New Testament there are warnings of Christians becoming partly bound or controlled by Satan described very vividly.
Paul cautions about the potential demonization of bishops, elders, and pastors (1 Tim 3:6-7)
Cautions about Bible teachers, preachers and prophets (2 Cor. 11:3-4, 13-15, 1 Tim 1:19-20 w/ 2 Tim 2:14-26; 1 Tim 4:1; 1 John 4:1-4)
a) There is the enigma of demonized “deaconesses” (1 Tim 5:9-15) and the danger of demonized Christian leaders and miracle workers (1 John 4:1-4; Matt 7:13-29; 2 Thes 2:1:17; Rev 13)

Slide 18

Paul says “Give no place to the devil”.
Place = “topos” the word from which we derive the English word “topography” . Used to describe a region or locality of a place which a person or thing occupies.

Slide 19

How many believers are in bondage to evil habits?

Slide 20

THE CAUSE

Slide 21

Six Sin Area and the Possible Demonization of Christians
Generational Sin
Child Abuse
Anger, Bitterness, Rage, Rejection and Rebellion
Sexual Sins
Curses in the Spirit World
Occult Practices

Slide 22

Generational Sin
Generational sin is sin judgment which moves through the family line.
The Scripture gives us divine warnings that the sins of the parents can have potentially devastating consequences on their children. Exodus 20:5 (The deliberate turning away from God)

Speaker notes:

Generational sin is called by various other names such as; transference, inheritance, or familial sin. Exodus 20:5-6 Deut. 5:9 (b) – 10; 18:9-14 In such rebellion the authority figure deliberetly turns from God to serve other gods, Sata or other spirits.

Slide 23

The generational curse can be broken by family members who identify themselves with the sins of the fathers. Neh. 1:4-9 Jer. 14:20 Dan. 9:1-21 “Suffering for the sins of their father’s; not of their own”

Slide 24

Child Abuse
The victim of child abuse becomes the victim of the sin of others, usually trusted authority figures.
Children are the most vulnerable and defenseless of all human beings. As a result, children are very susceptible to demonization (Matt. 15; Mark 9; Acts 16)
Children become adults, parents, and grandparents. Damaged, demonized adults tend to raise demonic demonized children.

Speaker notes:

Children cannot protect themselves from other humans, and supernatural evil.

Slide 25

Types of Abuse
Four Types of Abuse
Sexual Abuse
Physical Abuse
Psychological Abuse
Religious Abuse
Negative Reactions
Extreme shame, sexual problems, fear, anger
Extreme rage, relationship problems
Negative self image, spirit of rejection
Extreme confusion about God and faith. Inability to trust God or the Son of God

Speaker notes:

* See written notes

Slide 26

Anger, Bitterness, Rage,
Rejection & Rebellion
These sins usually result from wrong or alleged wrong done in childhood or youth. While reactionary sin arises because of wrong or supposed wrong done to an individual, reactionary sin itself can open the door to demons.
Most demons of anger, bitterness, rage, rejection, and rebellion come in after the abuse as the victim gives way to anger and rage over what is or has happened.

Slide 27

Sexual Sins
Sexuality occupies an important place in human life. While God is not sexual he has created unique qualities of maleness and femaleness. Neither man nor woman is fully complete without the other. Disturbed human sexuality disturbs the whole person. Demons exploit it for evil.
When a person is crippled sexually, their entire being is damaged. More harm can be done to humanity by debasing sexuality than by almost any other single factor except for spirituality.

Slide 28

Sex is one of the most powerful drives in life. Men and women face some of their fiercest struggles at this point. Sex out of control leads to some of the greatest personal and social problems faced by humanity. AIDS and abortion result primarily from the abuse of sexuality, as do prostitution, rape, incest, homosexuality, and the unimaginable range of sexual perversions humanity practices.
Demons of sexual abuse and perversion are floating in the air (so to speak) everywhere. They are among the most active, subtle, and vicious of all demons.

Slide 29

Curses in the Spirit World
The Bible opens and closes with curses. God pronounces the first series of curses upon Satan, mankind and the land. (Gen. 3:14-19). The last reference to the curse declares its end (Rev. 22:3)
For humanity, there is no escape from the power of the curse and curses until the new heavens and new earth have come and the saints are glorified with our Lord in the eternal kingdom.

Slide 30

Curses come from four possible sources…
God
God’s Servants
The Spirit World
Satan’s Human Servants
All four release spiritual energy towards that person or object cursed.

Slide 31

Noah pronounces a curse on Canaan and blessing on Shem and Japheth (Gen. 9:25-27)
Isaac blesses his twin sons and pronounces a curse upon anyone who was to curse Jacob (Gen. 27:27-28)
Jacob blesses his 12 sons, the most elaborate series of parental blessings in Scripture (Gen. 49:28)
The power released in either blessing or cursing was real. The curse was to be feared and the blessing to be coveted.
Jesus himself cursed a fig tree which bore no fruit (Mark 11:12-14)

Slide 32

Occult Practices
There are two broad types of occultism with which we are at war: non-Christian occultism and Christian occultism.
A broad summary of non-Christian occultism would take pages and pages of material.
The following are several areas of focal points of warfare for believers, especially in the Western world…

Slide 33

Non Christian Occultism
The horoscope and other astrological practices.
The use of Ouija boards and similar methods to direct contact with the spirit world.
Fantasy role games “Dungeons and Dragons”.
The acceptance of use of any psychic powers from pre-conversion days.
Any and all attempts to seek psychic or spiritual healings.
Practices of ESP, clairvoyance, levitation, astral projection.
Any involvement in cults, séances, belief in reincarnation or attempts to contact the dead.
All Eastern and mystic religions.
Immoral or destructive music; many of these groups are demonic or occultic.
New Age movement.

Slide 34

“Christian” Occultism
This involves seeking or accepting spiritual experiences within a “Christian” context without examining their true source and the motives for seeking such experiences from the perspective of Scripture. (1 John 4:1)
Doctrinal content implied, especially with respect to the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, must stand up under the Word.
True experiences with the Holy Spirit produce humility, not pride. The believer draws closer to the Lord. Holiness of life is increased. (Gal. 5:22)
The body of Christ is edified (1 Cor 12-14) One does not see to draw away disciples after himself (Acts 20:30); but seeks only to produce disciples of the Lord Jesus.

Slide 35

Come to know Christ.
Rid oneself of deep rooted false beliefs.
Follow the one and only God alone.
We cannot serve two masters.
We do not need good luck or ‘magic’.
With God as our Father, we don’t need foreign Gods.
