Building Together Part 2 - Teachers Edition

Church Government

5-fold-ministry

See Courser Objective Outline and Overview Text - (Chapter Thirteen) Pg. 15

Key Text - Eph 4:11-12: He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ - NKJV

Review Discussion Activity – Men can lose their place in history or usefulness in the church by following their giftings rather than their callings (Pg. 15)

Refer to Teaching Notes Outline (Pg. 16):

Everything Needs a Head

Corporate America

The family

Every Organization or Committee

God is head over all

Appoints delegated authority in his church

Establishes all authority in the earth – Rom 13:1 There is no authority except from God.

Provides picture of delegated authority in the Bible

Family patriarchs

Elders of nations

God’s delegated authority is NOT chosen by democracy – they are men and women chosen by God (Pg. 17)

Matthew 8:5-9 (Centurion - Must be men under authority)

Numbers 12:1-15 (Miriam grumbles – must be able to recognize those God appoints as leaders)

Numbers 16:1-35, Mark 3:13 & 19, Acts 13:14-23, Acts 26:14-18, Titus 1:5

New Testament Definitions of Leaders (PG 17 & 18)

Elder/Bishop/Oversee/Pastor/Shepherd – Indicates what the leader does, not who he is by office.

Responsible to watch over the flock, Feeds the Flock, Guards the Flock, Guards the Culture

Tim 4:12, Titus 1:5-7, Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:2 (Pg. 18)

Deacons (Servant Minister)

Servants of the body

Stephen and Phillip – examples

Anointed, Full of the Spirit, Miracles

Same qualifications as an Elder

1 Tim 3:8, Phil 1:1

Church Government Works in Team (Pg. 19)

Biblical Leadership works in team, not singular

Every team has a Senior Leader

Leadership teams are not colleagues or staff, they are submitted one to another

Examples in Scripture

Acts 14:23

Acts 15:22

Acts 20:17

1 Tim 5:17

The 5-Fold Offices (Pg. 19-22)

Apostles, Prophets, Evangelist, Pastors and Teachers (Eph 4:11-13) – Pg. 19

Primary Goal is to equip the saints and bring the church to maturity

All 5 offices are still in operation today, because fullness has not yet been obtained

Every Elder is a five-fold calling, not all five-fold callings are local church elders

Leaders are only called to one office, but may do the work of another office through Grace provided (Example: Prophet with apostolic wisdom, Prophet with a teaching grace)

2 Tim 1:11 (Pg. 20)

1 Peter 5:1 (Pg. 20)

Definition of 5-Fold Offices

Apostle

Sent One (1 Cor 12:28) – (Pg. 20)

Establishes Churches and Leadership Teams

Strengthens existing churches

Helps formulate doctrine

Father among leaders and churches

Prophet

God’s Mouthpiece revealing the revelation of Christ (Eph 3:5) – (Pg. 20)

Works alongside apostles to lay foundations in the church and establish leadership

Receives messages and direction from God to help:

Direct, Warn, Inform, Encourage, Exhort, Edify, Console, Affirm, Appoint

Sometimes foretells future events

Identifies grace and calling on future leaders to establish them

Evangelist

One who proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the purpose of winning new souls

Acts 21:8 (Pg. 21)

Phillip preaches to masses to the lone eunuch

Not a one man show, but called to train and equip the body with the spirit of evangelism

Pastor

One who feeds and cares for the sheep and body of Christ

Ezekiel 34:12-16; John 10:10-15 (Pg. 21)

Is not the guy who runs the church. Typical models are incorrect.

One-man leadership forces a single man to operate as all 5 offices. (not God’s design).

Pastor is a member of the leadership team

Heart for the sheep like the evangelist has for the lost.

Teacher

One who is skilled and anointed to unfold the revelations hidden in the Word of God

Jn 20:16 (Pg. 22)

Jesus is all in all (Pg. 22)

Jesus is THE Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher. Offices carry a part of Christ himself.

He appoints offices to build his people and church

We are to recognize those God has called and appointed over us and respond to that calling and office

Other Gifts to the Church

Psalmist, helps, administrations, hospitality, giving, intercession ect.

People can and do operate in submitted graces even when not in direct leadership, but under leadership

The church belongs to God: It is his Government, His gifts, His callings, His leaders, His People

Local Church (Session #2) - CLF Family Genesis, Mission and Daily Life
