Nine Functions of Prophetic Words
Disclaimer: DO NOT pastor through the prophetic: some things should be said pastorally or through clear conversation, not masked as “thus saith the Lord”.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:1-5
Edification – to build up individual believers, bringing them to maturity so that they too can work in a context of structure (i.e., the Church)—helps people to find their place.
Ephesians 4:11
Consider Haggai or Zechariah who practically looks/sees the sequence of a person’s development and can prophetically speak to them based on the season that they are in and so as to help them to get to the next place (i.e., character, identity/sonship, gifting, grace, office, etc.)
Psalms 119:105 / The prophetic word is lamp unto my feet (i.e., the right next step) and a light unto my path (i.e., future movement and forward)
Word of Knowledge therefore is a supernatural knowing of the now (i.e. next step or steps) master-builders use as an assessment for ministry
Prophetic Team Ministry – bringing your gift to the table; being harnessed to the leaders and architects that can be supported to edify believers and build the church, provides pastors and elders with words that they can build out of; provides discipleship to support the prophetic journey.
Prophets see in part and know in part (I Corinthians 13:12) and can ask questions, a “prophetic interview” used for sufficient insight.
Edify also means to be responsible with the release of the prophetic—it should build and not hurt people.
Exhortation – warning and encouragement
Warning: Keep believers from straying from God; warn of sin
Encourage: Acts 15:32, strengthen the believer to continue with destiny and in
the will of God.
Comfort – provides a divine salve and understanding that supports a beliver in sorry, pain, or difficulty.

Questions and Answers:
Q: How do you release judgment prophetically with love?
A: The prophetic is called to “hire and fire”. Wisdom must be sued to determine if a public or private word is appropriate.
Be mindful that public release of a word of judgment can have a serious and pervasive impact upon many people.
Q: Some people have been abused by the prophetic—how do you restore people or help people if they are in a church without structure?
A: Be led by the Spirit on how explicitly to operate; for example in a Baptist church context, when called upon to pray for a group of youth leaders once, I did not blatantly prophesy over them everything that I saw, but prayed that God would respond to specific/personal situations that He was showing me.
Q: Growth—how does one grow in the prophetic; especially if it can be recognized that some functions are beyond your “grade level” and/or if one is alone, in a desert place?
A: Seek out a company of prophets to teach and to guide you with the release of words; know that one of the goals for people in Nairobi is to bring other prophets onsite to activate prophetic people there and pull them into ministry moments; access relational prophetic voices.
Q: How does the prophetic function in worship ministry? How should it be managed/facilitated since worship is to the whole church body?
A: Administration is important. Relationships are important amongst leaders who can learn to communicate with one another for adjustments and course corrections within a meeting or atmosphere.
Walk with covering, submission, and practice.
Listen for the “audibles” outside of natural administration and submit it to the team.
Maintain a balance of spontaneity and prepared order.
