Stir Up the Gift
Understanding Holy Spirit Manifestations
Part II
Speaker notes:
This is a three-part series on spiritual gifts, shared over 3 Sundays in May/June 2023.
In 2 Timothy 1:6, Paul gives Timothy an apostolic admonition to remember and “stir up the gift of God” that is in him. Remembering is a faculty of the mind that requires intentional recall and attention to what was learned or experienced. To “stir up” means “to kindle up, inflame one’s mind, strength, or zeal” – it’s the word picture of intentionally gathering, preparing, and positioning fuel (like wood) for a fire and actively stirring or repositioning elements of the fuel that they might catch on fire…produce heat/light. The goal and prayerful outcome of this series is just that—as believers receive, believe, and recognize truth related to spiritual gifts and the work of the HS through them that by faith they will stir that which has ben brought to bear/positioned in their hearts and minds, the manifestation of the HS will result like an inflamed manifestation. This is also the biblical picture of godly people, at God’s command, bringng to the altar that which He desired (sacrifices, themselves, etc.) and being priestly/prophetic representatives in the earth who allow the fire of God to fall and kindle that which they have offered, testifying to the world that He is the true and living God (Lev 9:24, 1 Kings 18:38, Judges 13:19, Acts 2:3, Romans 12:1, Hebrews 12:29)
Key/Connective Points from David Hay’s Message on the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit living inside of you is part of God’s eternal plan. And it is through His regenerative work (that our hearts are made new) and through His infilling/indwelling that we are empowered to live like Jesus—”Christ in you is the Hope of Glory” (1 Corinthians 1:6; Colossians 2:5), becoming the manifestation of the Sons of God (Romans 8:19…cf 1 Corinthians 12:7…the manifestation of the spirit is given to profit withal….Apokalypsis = lay bare what was hidden, disclosure of the truth AND Phanerosis = a expression, exhibition, bestowment…The Holy Spirit will manifest Himself in and through me, so that I can become a manifestation to the world).

Speaker notes:
Part II:
Focuses on the second set of Holy Spirit manifestations, the speaking Gifts.
Foundational understanding: God is a Living God, alive, full of volition, communicative, and giving…it is His desire to interact with humanity. From the very beginning, in the Garden of Eden, God would commune with Adam and Eve daily, walking with them, His voice walking with them (Genesis 3:8). Throughout the ages, He has continued to reveal His voice to men (people) in hope that they would surrender to His heart and in turn amplify His voice in the earth (i.e., like of Samuel for his generation). The greatest amplification of His voice on earth was that of His Son Jesus…the Word that became flesh (John 1)…in these last days He’s spoke to us by His Son (Hebrews)…and now that the Son has ascended, He’s imparted His Spirit to us and given us the Inspired Word of God that we might hear and know the voice of God….then the next step is to open your mouth and say what He says…Isaiah 6:6-7…Coal - Voice – Go and tell this people…
Speaking Gifts often manifest or are activated with a “bubbling up”, a thought or feeling of inspiration, which when the speaker steps out in faith, bursts forth into the Word of the Lord (Jeremiah said it was like fire in his bones 20:9; Jesus told his disciples not to worry about what to say, but “to embrace the unscripted reality of God filling your mouth when you open it”…trust and follow His spirit…Matthew 10:19, Mark 13:11).

Tongues
Utterance – Edification – Divine Communication
Acts 2:4,11; 10:44-46; 19:6; I Cor. 12:28
Mark 16:17; Matthew 3:17, 17:5; John 12:27-33
Speaker notes:
Tongues: Supernatural speaking of unknown human languages or a heavenly (or angelic) language as the Holy Spirit gives utterance. This spiritual gift can be used for personal edification (i.e., praying in the Holy Ghost) or for corporate communication from God when coupled with the gift of Interpretation.
Scriptural examples:
NT example: Acts 2:1-13 – On the day of Pentecost, the Spirit of God descended upon The 120 (Jewish Believers) who gathered in the upper room to pray. God filled them with His Spirit, manifesting a physical sign of a flame of fire upon their heads and also a supernatural sign/enablement to utter/speak an unknown language. The interpretation of tongues also occurred as hears from 17 different global/linguistic regions were able to HEAR the praises of God being declared and spoken; others, who apparently did not hear/understand the interpretation simply said that those filled with the Holy Ghost was drunk. / Acts 10:46 – Peter travels to Ceasarea under divine prompting and preaches a dynamic Gospel message to the Gentile household of Cornelius; while he was speaking the faith of those in the room connected with the will of God and “the Holy Spirit fell on them all”…again, the manifestation of the outpouring including speaking in tongues and magnifying God…which was heard/understood by the Jewish hearers. / Acts 19:6 - Paul met a group of 12 disciples at Ephesus and inquired if they had received the Holy Ghost…they did not even know there was such a thing, but were willing to receive all that God had for them, so Paul baptized them in the name of Jesus, laid hands upon them, and the Holy Ghost came upon them…when this happened “they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”
Jesus’ Example: The Gospel writers do not actually record an instance of Jesus speaking in tongues. However, Jesus declared that the sign of tongues would follow those that believe, “They shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17), amongst other manifestations and signs that the power of God was upon them. / Additionally, recognizing the overarching theme associated with Tongues — (God speaks from heaven—Manifestation of Language—Interpretation/Understanding: Our Sovereign God touching humanity by His Spirit, such that there is a manifestation of power through speech/language, which may or may not also include an understanding or interpretation of God’s heart/mind through a known language of the hearers), there are three instances of this in Jesus Life:
His Baptism: Matthew 3:17 (Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22) — When Jesus was baptized, a voice came from heaven and made a declaration that the hearers could understand, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased”.
His Transfiguration: Matthew 17:5 (Mark 9:7, Luke 9:34-36) — When Jesus was transfigured on earth tangibly manifested in His Glory before a small group of His disciples; The Cloud of God’s Voice overshadowed the group and voice made a declaration that the hearers present could understand, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well please; hear ye him.”
His Reception with Gentiles: John 12:27-30 — In response to a consummate (perfect/complete) prayer, The Voice of God the Father comes out of heaven and makes a declaration, which was heard as thunder to the all the hearers present; some supposed it to be angelic voice, but Jesus actually understood what was said and communicates to the people that the Voice was a sign for them.
Tongues is a sign of divine redemption — James 3:2-12

Speaker notes:
Pentecost: The variety of nations/regions/nationalities represented on the Day of Pentecost….there may have been more nations present…not mentioned….and the Holy Spirit used Tongues to testify to the work of redemption and empowerment in the earth.
Slide 5
Interpretation of
Tongues
Utterance – Edification – Divine Communication
Daniel 5:24-28; 1 Corinthians 14:13, 27
Speaker notes:
Interpretation of Tongues: A supernatural understanding and meaning of an utterance of Tongues given by the Holy Spirit. He speaks it in Tongues and then allows someone else to understand and willfully declare by faith what He just said.
Scriptural examples:
The Handwriting on the Wall: Daniel 5:1-31, As a sign (and warning) to the King of Babylon, God supernaturally writes words on wall during a drunken, idolatrous, and disdainful banquet. The king is troubled, but neither he, nor any of his astrologers, soothsayers, or wisemen can understand the meaning or interpret the writing. Daniel is called upon because he is filled with the Spirit of God. Upon arrival, Daniel interprets the tongue, releasing a prophetic warning and judgment upon the king…who receives it, and rewards/thanks Daniel.
NT prescription: pray for interpretation (1 Cor. 14:13) and allow for 2-3 messages to come forth in tongues and let one interpret (1 Cor. 14:27).
Personal Examples:
Pastor Bond speaking in tongues/praying in German at 700 club.
Eric Rothie on basketball court…
Mother filled with the Holy Ghost…embarrassed about her tongue…it didn’t sound like everybody else’s….later heard what sounded like her tongues on National Geographic program featuring a tribe of people dialoguing in Africa.
My mother prayed to know the interpretation of tongues that came forth in a church service; she prayed for a week until God revealed it to her.
Prophetic conference with Buck/Tom in Casper, demand placed on gifts of spirit…these speaking gifts…and prayer in tongues was made, “prophecy” as interpretation was rejected, prayer in tongues was made again…and we asked someone in the church to seek God for an interpretation and someone stepped forth in faith and interpreted the tongue…God speaking to the missional nature of that that church and being positioned like an Antioch with regional influence into Asian nations.
Revelation gifts often come by seeing, hearing, feeling, or through inspiration.
Slide 6
Prophecy
Foretell - Forthtell – Comfort - Edification
Acts 11:28; 21:10-14; 1 Corinthians 14:3
Mark 14:30, 72; Revelation 19:10
Speaker notes:
Prophecy: Supernatural ability to speak on God’s behalf (to declare the Word of the Lord), specifically to foretell (declare what will occur in the future) or forth-tell (declare what God is saying in a moment, regarding that moment); prophecy as a corporate body ministry is often used for encouragement, comfort, edification.
Scriptural Examples:
NT Example: Acts 11:28; Acts 21:10-14 — Agabus was a Jewish prophet from the Jerusalem church with a translocal ministry; he is seen traveling to Antioch and delivering a prophecy regarding an impending famine (I.e., economic collapse)—the church received this word and prepared an offering to support those in another region who would be hard hit. Nearly a decade later, Agabus visits a gathering of believers at Philip’s house in Ceasarea and gives a prophetic word to Paul, warning him of certain persecution from Jewish people in Jerusalem. This word, actually bore witness with Paul, but he did not altar his course of travel..he moved in faith, trusting God with the outcome and for His will. In both instances, the release of Agabus’ prophetic words are recorded as being inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus’ Example: Mark 14:30, 72 — Jesus prophecies to Peter on the night of his betrayal that before a rooster crows twice, Peter will deny him thrice. / Rev. 19:10 — the testimony of Jesus Christ is the Spirit of Prophecy! Jesus is the greatest prophetic word every declared in the earth and He is the greatest fulfillment of prophecy in the earth! / John 5:30, I can of mine own self do nothing; as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
