Stir Up the Gift
Understanding Holy Spirit Manifestations
Speaker notes:
This is a three-part series on spiritual gifts, shared over 3 Sundays in May/June 2023.
In 2 Timothy 1:6, Paul gives Timothy an apostolic admonition to remember and “stir up the gift of God” that is in him. Remembering is a faculty of the mind that requires intentional recall and attention to what was learned or experienced. To “stir up” means “to kindle up, inflame one’s mind, strength, or zeal” – it’s the word picture of intentionally gathering, preparing, and positioning fuel (like wood) for a fire and actively stirring or repositioning elements of the fuel that they might catch on fire…produce heat/light. The goal and prayerful outcome of this series is just that—as believers receive, believe, and recognize truth related to spiritual gifts and the work of the HS through them that by faith they will stir that which has ben brought to bear/positioned in their hearts and minds, the manifestation of the HS will result like an inflamed manifestation. This is also the biblical picture of godly people, at God’s command, bringng to the altar that which He desired (sacrifices, themselves, etc.) and being priestly/prophetic representatives in the earth who allow the fire of God to fall and kindle that which they have offered, testifying to the world that He is the true and living God (Lev 9:24, 1 Kings 18:38, Judges 13:19, Acts 2:3, Romans 12:1, Hebrews 12:29)
Key/Connective Points from David Hay’s Message on the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit living inside of you is part of God’s eternal plan. And it is through His regenerative work (that our hearts are made new) and through His infilling/indwelling that we are empowered to live like Jesus—”Christ in you is the Hope of Glory” (1 Corinthians 1:6; Colossians 2:5), becoming the manifestation of the Sons of God (Romans 8:19…cf 1 Corinthians 12:7…the manifestation of the spirit is given to profit withal….Apokalypsis = lay bare what was hidden, disclosure of the truth AND Phanerosis = a expression, exhibition, bestowment…The Holy Spirit will manifest Himself in and through me, so that I can become a manifestation to the world).

Speaker notes:
The 9 Spiritual Gifts that the Apostle Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 12:1-12 can be arranged in a triplet format based on divine functionality (i.e., What is God/Holy Spirit revealing, saying, or doing through you when these gifts are in operation?).
For each gift referenced, teach/preach through scriptural contexts from the Book of Acts (NT church), Jesus’ life (Our Lord and Example), and the Old Testament (spiritual heritage).
Epistle Backdrop: 1st and 2nd Corinthians were written out of this backdrop—Paul is on his second missionary journey with a small apostolic company, which included Silas, Timothy, Aquila and Priscilla (the latter two he meet in Corinth and they shared a trade skill). As was his custom, he attempted to implant the Gospel in the hearts of those in the Jewish community, but faced resistance and rejection—divine frustration at that point, led him to minister to a Gentile audience. His ministry impacts a Gentile named Jason and a Jewish man named Crispus; through prophetic encouragement, his ministry grows and he continues to teach the word (establishing a church) over 18 months in a city that might be compared to modern day Las Vegas, NV. Attempted persecutions fail and Paul, Aquilla, and Priscilla leave for Ephesus. In Ephesus, they meet Apollos and after discipleship/impartation, Apollos goes on to Corinth and is received by the church there, as well as by the Jewish community and helps them to receive the revelation of the Gospel. So in a matter of 1.5-2 years, a Gentile/Jewish church is established; problems/questions arise after Paul’s departure and word is sent to Paul from Chloe (a member of the Corinthian church) to Ephesus, asking Paul for help. He responds by writing 1 and 2 Corinthians (and possibly a third uninspired, uncanonized letter). So, the things that he writes in these epistles are geared to help a burgeoning “baby” church with believers new to the faith, yet experienced in religious traditions and worldly-pagan practices—the goal is that they will find ORDER & UNDERSTANDING in the church, have a healthy dynamic of spiritual life, and effectively live in holiness and relationship with one another, THUS BECOMING A LAMPSTAND IN THE REGION.

Word of Knowledge
Information – Facts – Pertinent Details
Acts 5:1-5
John 4:15-19; 8:28,38
Speaker notes:
Word of Knowledge: Supernatural knowing of information, facts, or details pertinent to a person, group of people, or situation that the HS desires to impact.
Scriptural examples:
Acts 5:1-5 – Peter receives a word of knowledge regarding mishandling/embezzling of financial proceeds from the Ananias’ sale of property.
1 Samuel 9:3-6, 20; Upon initially meeting Saul, the prophet Samuel gives him a word of knowledge regarding lost donkeys, which Saul was unable to find and actually the undisclosed reason why Saul and his servant even came to Samuel’s hometown.
John 4:15-19, Jesus gave the woman at the well a personal word of knowledge regarding her promiscuous lifestyle/past, “You are shack’n up, ain’t married, and it’s been the same with the last few dudes!” This hidden detail of her life, disclosed in compassion, open her heart to truly receive what Jesus was offering…Himself, salvation, the water of life!
John 8:28, 38, Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know tha tI am he, and tha tI do nothing of myself; but as my Father have taught me, I speak these things….I speak that which I have seen with my Father.
Revelation gifts often come by seeing, hearing, feeling, or through inspiration.
Slide 4
Word of Wisdom
Insight – Divine Application – Prescribed Action
Acts 13:5-10, 8:26-29
Mark 11:1-7; Matthew 17:24-27
Speaker notes:
Word of Wisdom: Supernatural insight that prescribes a specific action (or inaction) as an application of divine wisdom for a person, group of people, or situation that the HS desires to impact in accordance with the will of God.
Scriptural Examples.
NT Example: Acts 13:5-10, 8:26-29 – Paul/apostolic team lead by Spirit to avoid specific regions and to enter specific regions for the propagation of the Gospel; Philip supernaturally directed to go into the desert and connect with a “stranger” riding a chariot for the propagation of the Gospel.
Jesus’ Example: Mark 11:1-7; Matthew 17:24-27 – Jesus directs 2 disciples with great detail (and remedy for conflict) in securing transportation for His triumphal entry; Jesus’ gives Peter specific directives for securing finances needed to pay taxes/tribute.
OT Example: Genesis 41:28-36, 6:13-22 – Following Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream, a word of wisdom is provided, specifically prescribing how the nation can prepare to survive a famine coming to the region (i.e., saving 20% of harvest during preliminary 7 years of plenty). / Also, Noah receives a word of wisdom, specifically prescribing how he and his family can prepare for a worldwide, cataclysmic judgment, saving themselves and many of the animals (i.e. preserving life on earth).
Revelation gifts often come by seeing, hearing, feeling, or through inspiration.

Discerning of Spirits
Identification - Judge - Understanding
Acts 16:16-40
Luke 5:16-26; Matthew 16:23
Luke 9:55; John 5:30
Speaker notes:
Discerning of Spirits: supernatural judging between good, identifying demonic spirits, works of darkness or evil motivations, as well as understanding Holy Spirit anointings, angels, holy atmospheres, and specific dynamics of God’s manifested presence.
Scriptural Examples:
NT Example: Acts 16:16-40 – Paul and Silas discern a spirit of divination at work in a slave girl who was continuously following them and essentially harassing them; Paul cast out the spirit, exerting the authority of Christ and enters into conflict with the principality (demonic ruling spirit) over the city, which seeks to stop their ministry through governmental involvement and arrest, but supernatural intervention overcomes the enemy as deliverance, salvation, and the establishment of the church at Philippi results.
Jesus’ Example: Luke 5:16-26; Matthew 16:23 – Jesus enters into a solitary place of prayer and then transitions to a place of ministry where it is noted that the presence of God was present to heal (!!! v17), in the midst of this Jesus perceives/discerns the thoughts of religious men, asks rhetorical questions, and finally works a miracle of healing that the atmosphere was ripe to produce, brining glory to God! / In a time sharing and foretelling His death, Jesus rebukes his disciple Peter, but speaks to Satan directly…note: that Jesus’ previous encounter with Satan was in His temptation in the wilderness, a couple years beforehand and the scripture records that the enemy left him for a more opportune time, which seems to be this one and later in the garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:47-50; Luke 22:3, John 13:27), working through Judas. / The gift of discerning of spirits is critical to the Body of Christ, because at times even disciples can be unaware of the spirits or ungodly motivations at work in the backdrop of ministry and life!
John 5:30, I can of mine own self do nothing; as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
OT Example: 1 Kings 22:10-23 / Micaiah, a true prophet of the Lord is called upon to bring the word of the Lord regarding their intentions and outcomes in going to war against the king of Syria…all the false prophets declare victory, but Micaiah prophesies the true outcome of defeat and explicitly reveals the discernment of a lying spirit in the mouths of the false prophets at work to ambush King Ahab…Ahab rejects the word of the Lord, imprisons the prophet, and camouflage’s himself in battle, but ultimately looses his life from a arrow wound.
Revelation gifts often come by seeing, hearing, feeling, or through inspiration.

Receive the
Holy Spirit
Take – Prove – Make Trial of - Experience
John 20:19-22
Speaker notes:
Conclusion: John 21:19-22 – On the evening His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples and breathed upon them a supernatural impartation of the Holy Spirit. The first revelation of the resurrection is peace (John 21:19); the second revelation of resurrection is apostolic (we are sent by the Father, John 21:21); and the third revelation of the resurrection is empowerment/presence (John 20:22). Just as God breathed into Adam the breath of life (Genesis 2:7), causing him to become a new/living creature, so Jesus breathes upon His disciples, instigating the new creation of Spirit in man (Ezekiel 37:14; 1 Corinthians 15:45) Altar: Jesus blowing/breathing on His Church.
